Wonder Girls Monthly Volunteer Days

These past few months have been a whirlwind of amazing volunteer experiences for our Wonder Girls.  Learning to be socially responsible and the importance of giving back to people in need are key components of our Wonder Girls program.  We not only build a sense of community, but we are helping to build kind human beings that are able to feel what it means to help someone who has less than or is disabled and needs extra support.  It also helps to make our girls feel good about themselves; to build self-confidence and to make themselves proud.

In December, our Wonder Girls at Cliffside Park High School helped to finish making holidays cards and friendships bracelets that were sent to girls who live in orphanages in Mexico, a project we started at the Nyack Center for #givingtuesday on November 30. Each girl from the orphanage received a homemade card and a beautiful bracelet made just for them for the holidays! Thanks to our wonderful sponsors Goya Foods, the company shipped everything down to Mexico for us and covered the costs of the shipping.

In January, we partnered with the Center for Safety & Change at The Nyack Center to educate our Wonder Girls on how to stay safe and alert when it comes to human trafficking. The workshop was led by human trafficking expert Jennifer Hammer from the Center for Safety & Change. Jennifer gave tips on how anyone can be a victim of human trafficking, whether through sex trafficking or labor trafficking. Being educated and aware are the first steps in the fight to end child trafficking. The girls created a paper quilt filled with words of wisdom, positivity, and sheer hope. We also had a special guest speaker emphasize the importance of following your dreams and never giving up. She gave each of our Wonder Girls a Rose Journal that she created, donated by R2M Realty, and a single rose.

In February, we partnered with BRIDGES, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for an accessible, integrated community and supporting health and autonomy for individuals with disabilities, to learn about BRIDGES and the services they provide our community. Our girls attended “In Our Shoes” an interactive series of workshops to learn about people with disabilities and their day-to-day lives. Our Wonder Girls learned that the human spirit is one of ability, perseverance, and courage that no disability can steal away.
